As pollution levels rise across cities, doctors are urging women to cut down on heavy eye makeup. While pollution is widely known to affect the skin and respiratory system, it can also harm the eyes — especially when combined with dense cosmetic products such as kajal, mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow.
According to Dr. Harbansh Lal, President and Head of the Delhi Eye Center, women should refrain from using heavy eye makeup in highly polluted environments. “Pollution carries fine particulate matter that can settle on the surface of the eyes. When mixed with thick makeup, these particles can get trapped, leading to itching, redness, allergies, and dryness,” he explains.
Why Heavy Eye Makeup Can Be Harmful
Products like waterproof mascara and eyeliner are particularly risky. Although they are designed to last longer, they require strong removers that can dry out and irritate the delicate skin around the eyes. In polluted conditions, this increases the risk of eye infections and inflammation.
Moreover, some cosmetic ingredients can trigger irritation or allergic reactions. When such substances come in contact with the ocular surface, they can cause sensitivity, redness, and burning. Long-term use may even contribute to chronic dryness or ocular surface diseases.
Even Makeup Removers Can Aggravate the Problem
Strong makeup removers and facial cleansers may worsen dryness by disrupting the natural oil glands near the eyes that help maintain lubrication. This leads to discomfort, grittiness, and increased sensitivity to dust and pollution.
