However, goals from Daniel Ballard and Brian Brobbey saw the points shared on Wearside, meaning Arsenal's lead at the top of the Premier League table is now only six points and could decrease further depending on the result between Manchester City and Liverpool on Super Sunday.
Arsenalwill now have to wait two weeks before returning to Premier League action to face Tottenham Hotspurin the North London Derby after the international break.

Rafael Leao hopeArsenal have reportedly been given hope at the possibility of signing AC Milan star Rafael Leao.
According to Caught Offside, the Serie A giants value Leao at around €85million (£74.7million) due to continued uncertainty around the Portuguese international's future.
Leao is under contract at Milan until 2028 and there is still no sign of a new contract, with the forward's current terms said to include a €150million (£132million) release clause.
Eberechi Eze messageEberechi Eze provided insight into the Arsenal dressing room's reaction to the draw with Sunderland on Saturday night.
The England international made a "serious" claim about the Gunners as they continue to strive to be Premier League champions.
“The message is that we did what we needed to do,” Eze told the Sunderland Echo.
